Introducing Pre-literacy Skills with Young Learners:
Through the use of topics, language, play, songs, art and role-play, it is possible for Very Young Learners to become aware of how sounds are linked to letters and words, creating positive reading and writing experiences from the earliest stages in preschool. Exposure to the English language using a natural and fun approach also helps to develop and reinforce skills such as pronunciation, vocabulary, language comprehension and acquisition essential for ESL-learners.
What is the Fun Phonics Framework?
The Fun Phonics Framework is an original publication that has been written and designed by literacy consultant and specialist Beki Wilson. Although it is an independent piece of work, it has also been endorsed and approved by Jolly Learning Ltd, London.
The Fun Phonics Framework is an informal teacher/parent guide that serves as a prelude to the formal Jolly Phonics programme or alternatively, lends some support when introducing pre-literacy skills with very young children.
During the past few years as a teach trainer, I have paid attention to the struggles that eductors face when it comes to introducing a formal literacy programme. Many of us question whenexactly is the “correct” age to begin reading, writing and speliing with very young learners, especially in an ESL-setting.
This Framework is all about introducing pre-literacy skills with the littlies in a fun and relaxed manner. There should be no pressure or deadlines involved when covering letter sounds and no specific order or time-frame is necessary at this stage of learning.
All the ideas and suggestions offered in the Framework can be adapted to suit the needs of your students and your own educational setting or curriculum.
Included in the Fun Phonics Framework:
- Weekly planning guidelines.
- Links to the Jolly Phonics & Jolly Music programmes.
- Adaptable vocabulary lists.
- Suggestions for popular children´s books.
- Over 200 easy, no-fuss activity ideas.
- Read Aloud tips.
- Ideas for extra curricular activities.
Over 200 simple, tried and tested activity ideas are included in the Fun Phonics Framework. These ideas can be adapted as necessary and are appropriate for the preschool stages.
